Azerbaijan ruling party says it is groundless to accuse media for opposition's failure

24 August 2010 [14:35] - TODAY.AZ
The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) believes there is no reason to blame the media for failure of country's opposition.

"The opposition has been engaged in opposition activity for 20 years. If it has failed to gain  people's support during this time, it is, at least, unscrupulous to blame the media," NAP Deputy Chairman  Ali Ahmadov said at the roundtable on "Coverage of elections in media" held by the OSCE Baku Office.

"I believe authorities have created favorable conditions for the press to ensure transparency of the electoral process and public control over the electoral process in Azerbaijan," Ahmadov added

He said all political parties can present their platforms to Azerbaijani voters during the electoral process.

Speaking at the conference, opposition Musavat Party Leader Isa Gambar said the electoral law contains some contradictions and gaps. Musavat Party was rejected to make statements on state television during the election campaign, he stressed.

"It is important to comply with all laws and regulations and apply laws in practice. We support equality in accordance with the legislation," Gambar added.

Chairman of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Ali Karimli also expressed his displeasure with denying air time to candidates from the opposition by television channels.
