Body of armed smuggler killed on Azerbaijan-Iran border handed over to his country

The smuggler was an Iranian citizen. His body was handed over to the Iranian border guards on Azerbaijan-Iran borders in Yardimli region of Azerbaijan. A few days ago Azerbaijani border guards skirmished with the smugglers on the Azerbaijan-Iran borders. One of the four trespassers was killed and others escaped from the site. 5 kg hashish, pistol, four pistol cartridges and 300 boxes of cigarettes were found and confiscated from the smugglers. A criminal investigation was launched on the fact.

The situation on Azerbaijan-Iran borders in Yardimli region of Azerbaijan remains tense after skirmish between border guards and smugglers, Chief of the Azerbaijan State Border Service, Lieutenant-General Elchin Guliyev told journalists. He said implementation of visa-free regime by Iran didn’t reduce the cases of trespassing. Guliyev didn’t give concrete statistics and said most of the trespassing cases were occurring on the southern borders.
