Azerbaijani Parliament speaker meets UN resident coordinator

Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament Ogtay Asadov met with the United Nations resident coordinator in the country Fikrat Akcura. Asadov said his country enjoys “close” relations with different agencies of the United Nations, including UNESCO and UNICEF.

The Speaker praised international organization`s contribution to realizing various projects and programs on healthcare, woman problems and poverty reduction in Azerbaijan. Asadov told of his country`s contribution to fighting international terrorism.

He spoke of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, pointing out four relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. Asadov said the UN General Assembly also adopted a resolution, noting “despite these resolutions demand an unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, they still remain unfulfilled”.

Asadov expressed hope that for ensuring stability and security in the region, the organization must “actively” use its opportunities to ensure the execution of all resolutions and force Armenia observe the international legal norms.

Akcura highlighted the importance of “good” cooperation between Azerbaijan and UN agencies.
The chief of the UN diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan vowed to spare no efforts during his tenure to contribute to further deepening the relationship.
