Azerbaijan MP on Armenia's failure in Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks

21 July 2010 [11:55] - TODAY.AZ
“The results of the Almaty meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers Elmar Mammadyarov and Edward Nalbandyan once again show that Yerevan simulates negotiations being reluctant to make serious moves forward,” Chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Reforms Party, member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) Asim Mollazade said.

The MP says today international community's position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict reflected in the statement by presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries in Toronto led to a situation that allowed to achieve major progress in a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

"Armenia felt this and once again failed the negotiation process. This should be followed by a tough stance of the international community which already has some understanding that it is Armenia who is a major obstacle in establishing a system of stability and security in the South Caucasus.”

“I have reiterated many times that the OSCE has failed to create an efficient system because of legal nihilism. In case of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the OSCE did not base on its founding documents,” Mollazade added.

“Armenia, which is member of OSCE, UN and other international organizations, did not face any sanctions for occupation of neighbor’s territory. Resolutions condemning Armenia’s occupation policy were not passed for a long time.”

“Fortunately, times have changed, and we have already witnessed resolutions by various influential international organizations which recognize Armenia as an occupier country and call for withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. This means that current situation allows to achieve major progress in peaceful settlement of the conflict," Mollazade noted.

According to the MP, this requires a constructive position of Armenia, which as a first step must withdraw from the occupied regions of Azerbaijan surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh which would be followed by opening communication and normalizing Turkish-Armenian relations.

"Ultimately, this will enable Armenia to stop being self-isolated “outpost" and become truly independent state," the MP underscored.
