Azerbaijani CEC set to increase number of webcams for greater transparency in elections

15 July 2010 [10:30] - TODAY.AZ
The Central Election Commission (CEC) may increase number of web cameras installed in polling stations for greater transparency of the electoral process.
"The CEC is ready to increase number of webcams installed in polling stations for greater transparency in the voting, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said.

Today, the process of installing a web-camera covers 10 percent of all polling stations across the country and this is consistent with international practice, but we, of course, may increase their number for greater transparency, Panahov added.

The head of the Central Election Commission also noted that in connection with this there were some financial problems, because the question was not agreed upon by the Ministry of Finance.

"The finance ministry believes that the international practice of providing 10 percent of polling stations across the country webcams is quite correct figure and does not see the need to allocate additional funds for the purchase of new webcams," said the CEC head.

However, the CEC plans to continue working on this issue and increase the number of webcams, Panahov noted.

Azerbaijan will hold parliamentary elections in early November this year.
