Azerbaijan, EU to begin visa talks in July

18 June 2010 [15:07] - TODAY.AZ
Official talks between the EU and Azerbaijan will be held in mid-July in Baku, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev told journalists today.
He said, Azerbaijan began the process of preparing for negotiations with the EU on all issues, including the issue of visa-free regime long ago.

"Baku hosted technical workshop June 17-18, and it is dedicated to the complex issues of mobility, that is, free movement of citizens, which includes issues of facilitating the visa regime, as well as the issues related to the protection of borders, migration control, including illegal migration. The sides exchange positions. This is the first serious step and we plan to begin talks with the EU on these issues soon," Mammadguliyev said.

According to him, the talks will last a year or a year and a half. "But the main thing for us is the fact that the EU considers that the agreement mobility must be accompanied by the signing of readmission agreement," he said.

Azerbaijan has no readmission agreement with any country yet, Mammadguliyev said.
