Azerbaijani political expert on possibility of war between Israel and Turkey

03 June 2010 [15:32] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Azerbaijani political expert Zardusht Alizade.
In your opinion, how far can the Turkey-Israel relations cool following Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza?

Though not only Turkey, but also the whole world condemned attack of the Israeli commandoes, the Turkish-Israeli war is unlikely to take place. In this case, of course, we will continue to witness more and more cooling in relations between these countries.

Losses from this will be sensitive to both countries. Israel risked losing its only partner in the Islamic world, which has always supported it and took care of the Jewish people. Turkey has also found herself face to face with the risk of losing the most important partner for its own military industry. There are already talks that joint projects in various sectors will be annulled.

I think the tension in Turkish-Israeli relations will eventually calm down as the time goe on. The two countries need each other very much. But each of the parties will draw a lesson from what happened. First and foremost, it concerns Israel, which realized that it cannot ignore views of the world community for eternal.

Can we hope that Gaza’s blockade will be eliminated, which the Freedom Flotilla exactly aimed to do?

Egypt has opened transition point into the Gaza Strip away from the Israeli control. So, at least in part, the main purpose of humanitarian action was achieved. Now, the blockade of Gaza has become limited. But, by and large, the position of Israel, I think, will remain the same. It does not intend to accept the establishment of a Palestinian state continuing to ignore the rights of Palestinians, focusing not on the force of law, but on use of force.

Is Israel guided by this postulate refusing to sign the nuclear nonproliferation treaty?

True. According to a number of experts, Israel has nuclear weapons. Israel’s refusal to sign Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons confirms that these allegations are right. But this policy of the State of Israel will not undergo any changes. It will continue to carry out the policy, which it considers best for itself, even if it is contrary to international law and is fraught with discontent of the world community.

In your opinion, what conclusion should Iran make from the incident in the neutral waters?

Iran once again made sure how serious enemy it is dealing with. It will build its future policy towards Israel in accordance with these realities.
