Baku hosts 5th interparliamentary conference on HIV/AIDS

Azerbaijan's capital has hosted a 5th interparliamentary conference aimed at exploring priorities of regional cooperation in improving HIV/AIDS legislation.
The event brought together MPs and government officials from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as representatives and experts of international organizations, including the United Nations.

Opening the conference, deputy chairwoman of the parliament, Bahar Muradova, said preventing HIV/AIDS was among key government priorities in Azerbaijan. She said the country had made certain achievements in this regard.

“We've adopted relevant programs, strengthened relevant legislation and also done good job to strengthen social security of the HIV/AIDS affected people.”

Manoela Grozdanova, United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Country Coordinator for South Caucasus, said HIV/AIDS was much more dangerous than terrorism and separatism.
“It is a great pleasure that countries represented here today have made certain successes in this regard.”

Zhaksylyk Doskaliyev, Kazakh Minister of Public Health, highlighted what his country had been doing to fight against HIV and AIDS.
