UNHCR Deputy Director of Bureau for Europe visits Azerbaijani parliament

Deputy Director of the Bureau for Europe of the United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees Guillermo Bettocchi has visited the Azerbaijani Parliament to meet chairwoman of the committee on human rights Rabiyyat Aslanova on June 1.

Aslanova gave detailed information about activities of the committee.

Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, she said the aggression policy by Armenia has resulted in the occupation of one-fifth of the territory of Azerbaijan and made approximately one out of every nine persons in the country an IDP and refugee.

The chairwoman of the committee highlighted efforts of the Azerbaijani parliament and government to improve living standards of IDPs and refugees.

She praised documents and resolutions adopted by the United Nations concerning Azerbaijani IDPs and refugees.

Aslanova said as Azerbaijan's economy had been developing, migrants from various countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq come to the country. “The Azerbaijani government renders every assistance to them,” she noted.

The UN official said his visit aims to acquire after problems of Azerbaijani IDPs and refugees. Bettocchi vowed he would spare no efforts to raise awareness of relevant UN bodies about current situation of IDPs and refugees living in Azerbaijan.

The meeting also saw discussion of various issues, including prospects for cooperation and education of refugee and IDP children.
