Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed attitude to tensions in Israel-Turkey relations

01 June 2010 [11:40] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry expressed its attitude to the tensions between Israel and Turkey.
Israeli navy attacked an international flotilla of human rights activist bound for Gaza Strip on May 30-31. According to Arab media, the attack killed at least 15 and wounded 30. The Israeli military confirmed the death of 10 persons from the flotilla.

"We express our concern over what happened and when the noble cause of providing humanitarian assistance to the Gaza population ended in fatalities. We consider it appropriate not to succumb to emotions in this situation. This incident should be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators must be punished,” Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Elkan Polukhov said.

”Azerbaijan is always ready to render humanitarian aid to Gaza, and on instruction of the President, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said this in his speech to an international donor conference to assist the people of Gaza on March 2, 2009,” Polukhov said.

He noted that Mammadyarov attempted to communicate with his Turkish counterpart, but a telephone conversation never took place as Ahmet Davutoglu was on his way to the U.S.
