U.S. TO OPEN SECRET MILITARY BASE IN AZERBAIJAN?

"The creation of military bases on Azerbaijani territory was never that serious. Although recently, some very weighty newspapers reported that this question has been decided already. I dont believe, that the U.S. will be creating any military bases in Azerbaijan", Azerbaijani military expert Uzeyir Jaffarov said, commenting on the news article published in The New York Times. Reportedly, NY Times reported that the U.S. plan to create military bases in Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan to carry out special military operations.

"If such military bases are needed, they should be in Georgia, not in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan being in this list, doesnt mean that those bases will actually be built here. It's a backup plan. Besides, Russia and Iran would react negatively on this decision. I dont think any military bases will be built on Azerbaijani territory anytime soon," said Jaffarov.

Russian political expert Alexei Vlasov, on his part, believes that the info about the possible installment of military bases should be checked with serious caution.

"About a year or two ago, American press also reported that the agreement on opening such military bases in Kazakhstan was reached. The information turned out to be a rumor. If however, this information proves to be true, then it can cause serious consequences, in relations with Iran for sure", said Vlasov.

"Considering developing and warm relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, I doubt that Azerbaijani government will go for those bases. Besides the dynamics of Russian-Turkish relations tell me, that this info is either wrong, or has been wrongly interpreted. However, if this proves to be right, it will cause much negativity and problems with both Russia and Iran", Vlasov concluded.
