US congressman welcomes European Parliament resolution on South Caucasus

The congressman reiterated his support to demands of the resolution on the withdrawal of Armenian forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan, accompanied by deployment of international forces to provide the necessary security guarantees of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs who fled their homes as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh war.

The congressman highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan as a “strategic” partner for the United States, noting its contribution to global energy security and antiterrorism coalition. Shuster pointed out that Azerbaijan today conducts trainings for security forces of Afghanistan, where he said, Azerbaijan supports construction of schools and hospitals.

He said the Section 907 of the United States Freedom Support Act, which bans any kind of direct United States aid to the Azerbaijani government, impedes expanding the partnership relationship, describing it as “contradiction” to the US` national interests.

The Pennsylvania Representative also called on the United States to play “more active” role as a mediator of the OSCE Minsk Group in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.
