Israeli MP on Khojaly genocide and Knesset's not recognizing "Armenian genocide"

26 May 2010 [13:14] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Chairman of "Our House - Israel" faction, member of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) Robert Ilatov.
The so-called “Armenian genocide” has been raised in the Knesset frequently as of late. In your opinion, what is the reason for this trend?

The Knesset Members are entitled to raise any issue. You are right, the issue of recognizing the 1915 events in the Ottoman Empire as "Armenian genocide" has been raising for many years.  This issue is raised by Knesset members who are committed to the Armenian interpretation of the events that took place 95 years ago. I believe that the Knesset is not a place of proceedings and clearing out dispute between the two states. It is worth recalling that this year discussions over the 1915 events were removed from the Knesset agenda like in previous years.

Once Knesset members have a right to raise any issue, why genocide against peaceful Azerbaijani population in Khojaly has not been discussed yet?

I reiterate that the Knesset is not a right place to discuss genocide of nations. Of course, we are sorry for the victims of the tragedy in Khojaly and also victims of any crimes against humanity. But there are organizations who are responsible to decide whether a certain crime against humanity can called genocide or not. The Knesset is not such an organization.

How do you assess current state of Azerbaijan-Israeli relations?

Azerbaijani-Israeli relations become warmer every year. This is not surprising. After all, our countries share many geopolitical interests. Moreover, Azerbaijan is a rapidly growing, stable state, a reliable partner with which Israel wants to cooperate. Cooperation between our two countries is mutually beneficial and has great prospects. It is not only relationship between two partners, but friendship tested by time.
