UN urges solving problem with IDPs illegally taking up houses in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan must solve the problems with internally displaced persons, who illegally took up houses, Walter Kälin, Representative of UN Secretary-General on the human rights of internally displaced persons, said at a meeting with the Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, the Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov.

According to him, the European Court receives from complaints from Azerbaijan on this issue from the legal owners of these apartments.

During the meeting, Hasanov said that over the past three years, implementing the decisions of the European Court, two apartments were returned to their owners. "In total, up to 3,000 IDPs families (13-14,000 people) illegally took up other people's houses, on which 385 owners have legal documents," said Deputy Prime Minister.

More than one million Azerbaijanis have become IDPs as a result of Armenia's occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani territories.
