An international conference “Nagorno-Karabakh: realities, prospects” has kicked off in Baku bringing together Azerbaijani intellectuals and scientists and representatives from educational NGOs in Turkey, Romania, Kazakhstan and Georgia.
The event was organized by the Union of Free Teachers with the assistance of the Council of State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations under the Azerbaijan President. Addressing the conference, correspondent member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, MP Yagub Mahmudov spoke of the causes and implications of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Mahmudov stressed the importance of the conference in terms of increasing the community's awareness of the conflict. He also told of the history of the ongoing processes in the South Caucasus region.

Mahmudov reproached the international organizations “as they show indifference to the conflict”. He also expressed regret over the fact “the OSCE Minsk Group`s efforts to settle the dispute have given no results”.

According to Mahmudov, one of the obstacles to settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a clash of interests of major countries in the region. Other speakers at the event delivered reports on prospects for peaceful settlement of the conflict. The conference will continue on May 22.
