19 May 2010 [09:05] - TODAY.AZ
Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee Aydin Aliyev is attending the 19th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna, which is aimed at preventing trafficking in cultural property.

In his opening remarks, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Antonio Maria Costa called member states to “ensure that nations have the laws, knowledge and tools to deliver justice appropriate to the twenty-first century”.

Mr. Costa called the current crime control system “inadequate to deal with new threats like crimes against the environment, individual identity or the Internet, as well as with old threats like piracy, kidnapping and slavery”.

Aliyev made interactive presentation on “Fight against smuggling: experience, opportunities and prospects of development”.

The presentation featured activities of the Azeri customs service, in particular fight against illegal trade and smuggling. Aliyev invited the participants to attend exhibition “Azerbaijan`s customs service on guard of cultural heritage” at the UN office in Vienna.

The Commission will decide how to act on conclusions reached and recommendations made at the Twelfth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which took place in April in Salvador, Brazil.
