Azerbaijani Finance Ministry considers increasing compensation amount for human trafficking victims

Azerbaijan has prepared a package of proposals in order to increase the amount of compensation for human trafficking victims.
"At the present time, this is being considered in the Finance Ministry. Currently, the amount of compensation for victims of human trafficking is 33 manat. The document envisages increasing this figure to 500-600 manat," the Interior Ministry's Department for Combat with Human Trafficking Head, Colonel Javad Shikhaliyev said at a press conference.

According to him, the week May 1-7 will be announced the week of fighting human trafficking.

"The week aims at fighting human trafficking, carried out by the OSCE Baku office jointly with the Azerbaijani Government, increasing public awareness in this sphere. In this regard, a series of activities will be conducted," the Interior Ministry's official said.

According to him, in 2009 women who became victims of human trafficking were taken off Azerbaijan and exploited in Turkey, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Russia and Iran.

"In 2009, 91 people became victims of human trafficking in Azerbaijan. Some 76 people were made criminally responsible for human trafficking. During this period, 4 Uzbek citizens, who were victims of human trafficking were sent back to Uzbekistan. About 90-95% of accused individuals are women," Shikhaliyev said.
