Azerbaijan Center for Strategic Studies hosts 'roundtable' on challenges in South Caucasus

A "roundtable" meeting on "South Caucasus: global trends and dangers" has been co-organized today here by the Center for Strategic Studies under the Azerbaijan President and UK-based International Alert peace-building organization.

The purpose of the event was to exchange views on the situation in the South Caucasus, security, peace and cooperation, as well as to prepare a strategy to fight the existing dangers in the region.

Addressing the event, secretary general of the organization Dan Smith said unresolved conflicts, including the Nagorno-Karabakh one put obstacles to economic development in the South Caucasus, and poses threat to peace and security in the region.

He stressed the necessity of maintaining economic cooperation to ensure regional security.
Other speakers at the event said drug trafficking and illegal arms trade in the uncontrolled areas emerged in the wake of Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan pose a threat to regional security.

They called on the international community not to confuse the aggressor with the victim, and to put pressure on Armenia to quit the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
