PACE: Organization should move away from double standards

14 April 2010 [11:35] - TODAY.AZ
President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Movlud Cavusoglu says he would seek to move away the organization, which he rules, from double standards.

"I have been representative of Turkey to CoE over seven or eight years and during my activities witnessed its double standards. After becoming chairman, I said that I will speak against a double standard in CoE. Because we have common values - to defend democracy and human rights. That is why there is a need to move away from double standards and therefore I will do my utmost," Cavusoglu said in Baku.

On Apr.13, Cavusoglu launched his Azerbaijan visit. This morning he visited the grave of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor, the Martyrs' Alley and the Memorial of Turkish soldiers.

After gaining independence, Azerbaijan has achieved considerable success, Cavusoglu said.

"Azerbaijan has taken important steps to join the PACE. We are witnessing the country's development in many areas," Cavusoglu said. "But this does not mean that Azerbaijan has completely reached the European standards. We would very much like Azerbaijan to continue development with this same pace. Our goal is to support the countries as Azerbaijan."

Azerbaijan was admitted to PACE on Jan. 25, 2005.
