Baku commemorates the Jew victims of Holocaust

12 April 2010 [11:36] - TODAY.AZ
Apr.11, Baku commemorated the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis in the World War II.
"The younger generation must be taught to remember these tragic events that occurred 70 years ago," Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan Michael Lavon-Lotem said at an event at the House of the Jewish Community in Baku. "Today, it is particularly noteworthy for me to be in Azerbaijan because this is a land where Jewish blood was not shed."

German troops, using artillery and armored vehicles, began their systematic destruction of the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw April 19, 1943. The liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto was completed after five weeks. Since then, Israel marks this day on the Jewish calendar as Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Israeli Consul to Azerbaijan Shlomo Ben-Zvi said the events were caused by the intolerance of the German government.

"By studying tolerance, we can protect future generations from similar tragedies," Ben-Zvi said.
