Azerbaijani FM: Armenian president silent about updated Madrid Principles

24 March 2010 [09:30] - TODAY.AZ
The uncensored rhetoric spread by political representatives in the Armenian media is surprising and disappointing because they try to misquote the position and comments of the Azerbaijani side, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov told Trend News.

"Voicing the call for concluding a treaty on the non-use of force, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan shamefully keeps silent about the first part of the phrase that is organically included in the updated Madrid Principles, which is respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan," Polukhov said.

He said that the Azerbaijani side has spoken only about the part of the Madrid Principles, which the Armenian president refused to talk about.

"The withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the Azerbaijani occupied territories will immediately remove the need to talk about military resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Polukhov said.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan gave an interview to Euronews and said that the international community has offered Armenia to solve the problem on using the right to self-determination, territorial integrity and non-use of force.

"I want to use the opportunity and appeal to Azerbaijan to sign an agreement on the non-use of force. This would lay the foundation of confidence in Armenia and Karabakh itself, enabling people to understand that Azerbaijan stands for peaceful resolving of the conflict. But afterwards we could work on the details ..." he said.
