Former Israeli Deputy Defense Minister sends protest letter to The Washington Post editor over recent article

19 March 2010 [13:20] - TODAY.AZ
Recently, some foreign media has stepped up anti-Azerbaijani propaganda associated with jealous attitude to the country’s diplomatic and economic achievements.

These publications that contain double standards with regard to Azerbaijan do not leave readers indifferent.

In this respect, Former Israeli Deputy Defense Minister General (R.) Dr. Ephraim Sneh has sent a protest letter to the editor of the U.S.-based The Washington Post newspaper over the recent article about the family of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan said.

"I read Andrew Higgins' story about the family of Azerbaijan's president. I think it is fair to remind the readers of a few facts about Ilham Aliyev, the president himself," Sneh's letter says.

"Azerbaijan is the most important and most reliable ally of the US among all former Soviet Union republics. President Aliyev helps US operations extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan, in more than one way, well beyond sending Azerbaijani troops to fight in these countries, as your story notes. The Azerbaijani president confronts alone, with no external support, an aggressive subversion by his southern neighbor - Iran. He wages tireless combat against terrorism. Many owe him their lives," he wrote in his letter.

Furthermore, President Aliyev is committed to Europe's energy security through his partnership in the planned "Nabucco" gas project, and the BTC oil pipeline, the letter says.

"Although one-fifth of Azerbaijan's territory is occupied by Armenia, and 1 million of his citizens are displaced, he continues to pursue a negotiated solution rather than taking advantage of his military superiority. The fact that your story was copied entirely in Azerbaijani opposition newspapers cast a shadow of doubt on your definition "increasingly authoritarian regime," Sneh wrote in his letter.
