Azerbaijani parliamentarian: Events of 20 January are black pages in history of Azerbaijani people

20 January 2010 [11:04] - TODAY.AZ
“The events of January 20, 1990 are black pages in history of the Azerbaijani people. These were tragic and terrible events,” member of Azerbaijani parliament Govhar Bakhshaliyeva said.
"I want no one to witness this terrible event. It was real aggression. Military vehicles of the vast empire were directed against unarmed people who were seeking independence. There were many dead and wounded," she said.

"We must draw some lessons from these events", the MP said.

"First of all, people were disappointment with the great state in which we lived at that time. People were disappointment also with the military forces of this state which we considered peacekeepers before that. We thought that the Soviet soldiers defend rights of downtrodden and oppressed people, but in fact it turned out that they do not, and they can deal with innocent people as well. The events of 20 January reflect this very clearly,” Bakhshaliyeva noted.

"Secondly, this is a lesson to all of us. Certain people, the then "leaders" put the unarmed people against the tanks. This happened due to their irresponsibility to a great degree, and people realized that they cannot survive without a wise leader who will protect them,” she added.
