Number of complaints sent from Azerbaijan to European Court reduces

05 December 2009 [13:32] - TODAY.AZ
"The number of the complaints sent from Azerbaijan to the European Court of Human Rights reduced in 2009 compared with the previous year," Judge of the Supreme Court Vafeddin Ibayev said at the meeting of the Common Court Judges Public Union.

According to him, the European Court has issued 18 decisions against Azerbaijan up to now, 16 of which, have been enforced.

Ibayev also noted the European Court’s position concerning journalists.

“According to the European Court, the duty of journalists is to spread interesting information, even the information that may cause confrontation. The European Court does not consider it expedient to impose serious sanctions on journalists. The court considers that while writing an article journalists think they will be arrested. The European Court does not want Azerbaijani courts to sentence journalists,” he said.
