Azerbaijani flags to be allowed in Turkey-Armenia soccer match: ambassador

13 October 2009 [15:55] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani flags will be allowed to the Turkey-Armenia football match to be held in the Turkish city of Bursa on Oct. 14, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Turkey Zakir Hashimov said.
"Turkish Foreign Ministry, the presidential administration and the office of Prime Minister [of Turkey] did not give orders to ban Azerbaijani flags at the match," said Hashimov.

"Bringing the Azerbaijani flag to the match cannot be banned."

The Bursa Governor's Office has imposed a ban on bringing Azerbaijani flag to the Turkey-Armenian match to be held on Oct. 14, the Bursa Governor Sehabeddin Harput's Spokesperson Nurdan Berkin said earlier.

Berkin said the step is taken to prevent possible provocations.

However, but later it was decided to allow them, Hashimov said.

The presidents of Turkey and Armenia are expected to attend the Turkey-Armenia football match. The two countries signed protocols on the normalization of relations in Zurich on Oct. 10.

Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims to recognize so-called "Armenian genocide" and Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijani lands.
