Armenian national football team arrives in Turkish city of Bursa

12 October 2009 [13:07] - TODAY.AZ
On Oct.12, the Armenian national football team arrived in the Turkish city of Bursa to hold a match with Turkey as part of the qualifying stage for the World Cup to be held on Oct. 14, the Turkish Cihan news agency reported.
The special unit of the local police will ensure safety of the Armenian footballers.

The Turkey - Armenia football match will take place on the backdrop of signing of the Ankara- Yerevan protocol on the normalization of relations that took place in Zurich on Oct.10.

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia have been severed since 1993 due to Armenians' claims of international recognition of so-called "genocide" and the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenian troops.

The Turkish officials have stated that the protocols will not be ratified by Turkey's parliament until the Azerbaijan-Armenia Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is resolved.

The Turkish-Armenian protocols need to be ratified by parliaments of both countries so that they will take effect.
