Armenian has agreed to a phased solution to conflict: Azerbaijani political expert

10 October 2009 [10:18] - TODAY.AZ
"The meeting of presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Chisinau has once again confirmed the fact that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not static,” Azerbaijani political expert Fikrat Sadigov said commenting on the Chisinau meting of Azerbaijan and Armenian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan.

"It is difficult to judge about the details of the negotiation process not being a participant to it, but the first comment on the meeting of presidents and, in particular, the statement of the OSCE Minsk Group say there are certain unresolved issues. But positions are coming closer,” Sadigov said.

"But all this does not mean that the issue of settlement of the conflict should be resolved outside the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. In this respect Azerbaijan's position is unambiguous and will not change. The fact that our position all these years has been consistent, unambiguous and principled shows that Armenia has rejected package principle to address the issue, because at the time they were insisting on this. We were able to do so that the Armenian side agreed to a phased solution to the conflict,” the political expert said.

"Of course, it was difficult to expect radical solutions from this meeting. Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict is too protracted and complicated to expect any unusual breakthroughs from one meeting. Of course, every meeting has a definite meaning and significance,” Sadigov said.

"Azerbaijan has managed to ensure that the process of rapproachement proceeds on in our favor. This suggests that we are on the right path and we must continue to demonstrate diplomatic maneuver with the principled firmness. I think that eventually we will arrive at the intended results.”

Commenting on the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols, Sadigov noted that Azerbaijan's interests does not stand on agenda.

"I would like to believe in statements made by Turkish officials. I believe that issues related to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict are directly related to the opening of the border between Ankara and Yerevan,” political expert said.

"Closure of the border between the countries was a good chance for us. If the border opens, it will untie the hands of Armenia,” he said.
