Azerbaijani MP's vote appears decisive in approving nomination for PACE chairmanship

10 October 2009 [08:45] - TODAY.AZ
Approving nomination of the MP from Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Movlud Chavushoglu for the post of Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was possible due to the member of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Ganira Pashayeva.
MP from the Republican People's Party (RPP) Birgen Keles wanted to prevent Chavushoglu from becoming a candidate from the European Democratic Party (EDP), Turkish website Habervakti.com and newspaper Ahsham reported. Approved by 47 votes with 46 against, Movlud Chavushoglu was supported by Ganira Pashayeva.

Under the agreement between the political parties of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the PACE President is replaced every two years, and in 2010 the Chairman of the organization should be the candidate of EDP. During Movlud Chavushoglu's nomination, protests were made in EDP, appeals were addressed to the PACE Bureau. If the appeal would be accepted, then Movlud Chavushoglu's election to the presidency would be postponed until 2011.

But with the support of Pashayeva, who returned from Frankfurt to Strasbourg to attend the voting, Movlud Chavushoglu gained 47 votes against 46. RPP MP Birgen Keles voted against Movlud Chavushoglu. Another RPP PM Tugrul Turkesh did not participate in voting.
