CIS significance should not be underestimated: expert

09 October 2009 [14:45] - TODAY.AZ
"Commonwealth of Independent States should not be considered useless organization."
"Its historic significance should not be forgotten, political scientist," editor-in-chief of Russian Kommersant newspaper Azer Mursaliyev said.

CIS summit is underway in Chisinau. Presidents of several member countries including Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan refused to attend.

Such decision of CIS countries' leaders is interpreted differently.

People say that the organization has lost its importance.

Mursaliyev said CIS significance should not be underestimated.

"I would not assess CIS as useless organization. Though it became the organization where heads and officials of participant countries discuss the same from year to year, its historical role should not be forgotten," Mursaliyev said.

He said that it is not a secret that CIS was established as a tool of 'civilized divorce' but not a union.

Expert said from this point of view CIS has fully fulfilled its role.

"This 'divorce process' of USSR collapse proceeded with a wrong scenario that might have been," Mursaliyev said.

He said that Yugoslavia is the example of those terrible prospects that might have cover USSR peoples.

CIS is the inter-state union of the most former USSR Republics established in Dec. 1991.
