16 September 2009 [13:19] - TODAY.AZ
EU General Affairs and External Relations Council had an exchange of views on enhancing EU relations with Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia as part of EU’s Eastern Partnership program.
The discussions on the Southern Caucasus aims to move the process forward and take concrete initiatives, for example free trade agreements under Eastern Partnership.

The Eastern Partnership program aims to build closer ties between the EU and its eastern neighbors.

The European Commission will present proposals for the negotiations with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. All three countries will be treated in the same way, they will be judged according to their own merits and the countries will be required to make sufficient progress on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

“The Council unanimously supports the process and looks forward to the Commission’s proposals. The EU has an important role to play in supporting the region”, said Foreign Minister Carl Bildt of Sweden, which presides over the EU.
