Iran’s allegations against Caspian states unfounded: expert

14 September 2009 [12:45] - TODAY.AZ
“I believe Iran will not undermine relations with the Caspian littoral states as the country is not interested in it,” Azerbaijan political expert Vafa Guluzade said commenting on a recent statement by the Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki criticizing informal Aktau meeting of Caspian littoral states’ from CIS without Iran’s participation.

“As to Aktau summit, this was meeting of the Caspian littoral states from the CIS. Iran was not invited as it is not CIS member,” he said.

“But here Russia had its own goals which it failed to achieve. It aimed to gain a veto right to the Caspian, that is, to obtain consensus to hold any communication via Caspian seabed.  But Russia did not get it as the summit focused on trade relations and bilateral ties between the Caspian states,” the political expert said.

“As to Iran, it has unrealistic stance on delimitation of the sea. Iran’s allegations against the Caspian littoral states are unfounded. Because as CIS member states, they can meet without Iran,” Guluzade said.
