Number of municipalities willing to join elections ups in Azerbaijan

"About 22 municipalities have applied to the Central Election Committee to ensure their participation in upcoming municipal elections despite their powers have not been completed yet. The commission studies these appeals at the moment," Secretary of the Central Election Committee Natiq Mammadov said.

Repeat and additional municipal elections held in Azerbaijan in 2006 covered 81 municipalities. Term of their powers will complete by 2011.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for mid-December, 2009. Number of people applied to the Central Election Committee increased up to 6 early this week.

"Every chairman of the municipality has the right to give up his powers. If a person denies his powers and has no other obligations in this regard, these powers must be passed to other person, because the control mechanism over municipalities must continue to work", Mammadov said.

Secretary of the Central Election Committee said the initiative to participate in the upcoming municipal elections by municipalities powers of which have not been completed yet to a desire to get more election campaign opportunities and a wide audience.
