Kazakh ambassador: Caspian littoral states to discuss Caspian issues, energy cooperation

28 August 2009 [11:33] - TODAY.AZ
Presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan will discuss energy and cross-border cooperation, as well as issues related to the Caspian Sea during an informal meeting in Aktau on Sep.11-13, Kazakh Ambassador to Azerbaijan Serik Primbetov told reporters.
The summit is of informal character and presidents will define the agenda. The issues on the energy cooperation are also expected to be discussed, Primbetov said.

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have no claims to one another with regard to dividing Caspian seabed. There are both bilateral and trilateral agreements between these countries.

The parties have also agreed to determine the coordinates of the median line. The issue is yet to be agreed with two countries - Turkmenistan and Iran - due to which the status of the Caspian Sea has not yet been defined despite many years of discussions.

Azerbaijan was the first the Caspian Sea littoral state to begin to set limits of the world's largest lake and define limits of control over it.

First, Azerbaijan announced the accessibility of its sector of the Caspian Sea, fixing this on Sept. 20 in 1994 by signing an international contract ("The Contract of the Century") with Western companies on a PSA model - production sharing agreement. This has also been reflected in Azerbaijan's Constitution adopted in 1995.
