Azerbaijan's governing party considers "Transparency International" report to be biased

26 August 2009 [16:25] - TODAY.AZ
The latest report by the "Transparency International" does not reflect reality, the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) said.
"Unfortunately, "Transparency International" was biased while developing its report. The report released by the organization on Azerbaijan does not reflect reality. Azerbaijan takes significant measures to combat corruption in the executive, legislative and judicial branches," the NAP senior official Mubariz Gurbanli told the party's official Web site on Aug. 26.

Azerbaijan ranked second in the list of countries with high level of corruption in the latest "Transparency International's" report.

Gurbanli said expenditures of the public budget are under a serious control and carried out transparently.

"All these are steps taken against corruption in Azerbaijan. The most important is eliminating reasons behind it. It is impossible to prevent such cases only via administrative way. It is possible to remove negative facts through reforms. And Azerbaijan is on this track," he said.

He said while analyzing the situation in Azerbaijan, the "Transparency International" held wrong methodological research.

"In fact, today all countries are fighting corruption. We often witness corruption scandals in the West. At present different programs on corruption are being implemented at the UN level. I believe that the "Transparency International" has not held the exact studies on Azerbaijan," said Gurbanli.

Gurbanli said if the corruption situation in Azerbaijan has been as the organization reports, our country would not rank among leading countries.

"In a country where corruption is entrenched, not development but regression would be observed. But, as you know, Azerbaijan is on the path of rapid economic development," said Gurbanli.
