Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission expects voters to maintain high turnout in municipal elections

26 August 2009 [14:19] - TODAY.AZ
Senior official of the Azerbaijani Election Commission Natig Mammadov expects Azerbaijani voters to maintain high turnout in the coming municipal elections to be held by late 2009.
"I do not agree with statements that Azerbaijani people are less interested in municipal elections than in other elections. Since Azerbaijan gained independence, Azerbaijani voters determined their positions towards elections step-by-step. Azerbaijani voters have high turnout in all significant issues," Mammadov said.

Official statistics also confirms this. Voter turnout is usually different in each municipality. In some of the municipalities voters take an active part in the municipal elections, in its activities and management, Mammadov added.

The Azerbaijani municipal election is scheduled for mid-December, 2009. Voter turnout was 52.6 percent in the 1999 municipal elections and 46.34 percent in 2004.

Regarding the list of voters Mammadov said that this process will be launched 35 days before the election day.

The Central Elections Commission has registered 4.804 million people with its permanent list of voters.
