Italian FM”s statement does not imply opposition: expert

20 August 2009 [13:31] - TODAY.AZ
“There is nothing sensational about statement by Italian Foreign Minister Franko Frattini,” Azerbaijani political expert Fikrat Sadigov said.
Recently, Italian Foreign Minister Franko Frattini said Italy does not oppose Nabuco while the country is involved with the South Stream.

“There is nothing new about it, because it is enough to recall the tripartite agreement on Southern Stream signed in Ankara by Turkey, Russia and Italy. But at the same time, it absolutely does not mean that Turkey and Italy oppose Nabucco. Italian officials have stated a need for Nabucco oil pipeline on numerous occasions,” Sadigov said.

“I think, Italian foreign minister’s statement does not imply Southern Stream and Nabucco are opposed to each-other, but rather diversification. Europe, aware the complexity of oil and gas supply, given the various political relationships between states and complex relationship between Russia and Ukraine, which transits gas to Europe, is seeking various ways and mechanisms to obtain additional hydrocarbons.”

Therefore, Frattini’s statement neither contradicts nor denies the Nabucco project that Italy remains committed to and which it needs because of the circumstances in the region,” he said.
