Caspian Sea status must be determined first of all: senior Azerbaijani official

20 August 2009 [08:43] - TODAY.AZ
Chief of International Affairs Department of Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Novruz Mammadov commented on a recent initiative by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to establish economic organization of the Caspian littoral states.
"It is difficult to say something concrete about it, because Russian president made this initiative in Astrakhan some days ago. Of course, it is an interesting idea. It should be studied before expressing attitude. I think Medvedev’s initiative may aim to solve a more important problem," Mammadov said.

The status of the Caspian Sea should be solved before establishing Caspian economic cooperation organization. This issue has almost been solved by three states – Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. This opinion may help solve this issue between Turkmenistan and Iran," he added.

The main point is that the status of the Caspian should be determined first, then based on this status cooperation establishment of Caspian economic cooperation organization may be discussed. Then it will be easy to determine on what principles the cooperation will be based, Mammadov said.
