Suicide bomber attacks NATO convoy in Afghanistan

19 August 2009 [08:47] - TODAY.AZ
Up to 10 people including Nato staff were killed in a suicide bomb attack on a convoy near a military base outside Kabul on August 18.
Dozens more were injured in the blast which came two days before national elections to select a new president.

A Nato spokeswoman confirmed the attack involved the alliance’s vehicles.

She said there were “some casualties” and several troops were wounded.

The Taliban have denounced the election and warned people they would be at risk if they attend polling stations.

Hours before the suicide blast, two mortar rounds struck near the presidential palace in Kabul.

The suicide attack was on the road leading from Kabul to Bagram Air Base, the largest facility in the country.

British troops guarded the site of the explosion as rescuers rushed the wounded to hospitals.

Security forces are on high alert this week because of Thursday’s vote.
