Turkmenistan makes inappropriate claims: political expert

18 August 2009 [14:51] - TODAY.AZ
“Russian president’s statement on Caspian Sea status is just recommendation,” Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Musabayov said commenting on Dmitry Medvedev’s order to design a convention on Caspian Sea legal status.
The political expert believes that Turkmenistan, one of the littoral states, made inappropriate claims and Medvedev’s statements will not dissuade it.

“Unfortunately, Turkmenistan makes inappropriate claims. But I do not think that Turkmenistan will change mind after these words. Turkmenistan is not so dependent on Russia.”
Musabayov said Medvedev’s statement could be taken as a recommendation to Turkmenistan.

“This is a recommendation. Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have repeatedly stated to Turkmenistan that it is necessary to reach an agreement. But Turkmenistan is not going to recede from their claims. Claims that the Absheron peninsula should not be taken into account are absolutely inappropriate. Why it  should not be taken into account? Even they can not find the answer to this question.”

The political expert said currently there is a tension between Turkmenistan and Russia, and both countries still have not come to an agreement on gas.

“Turkmenistan does not sell gas to Russia and also does not buy gas from Russia. Russia is trying to amend the previously signed agreement. Turkmenistan does not agree with that. There is no positive situation in relationships.”

The political expert said the statement by the Russian head of state does not mean anything.
