By quitting CIS Georgia does not lose anything economically, but gains politically: state minister

18 August 2009 [09:22] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia will not suffer economic damage after quitting the CIS, Georgian State Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili said.
"Leaving multilateral agreements under the CIS, we could conclude bilateral agreements with the CIS member countries in 2008, so the losses will be minimal," he said.

The State minister emphasized that in political terms, "Georgia could get out of a fictitious post-Soviet space, which is dominated by Russia."

"For us, this is a chance to promote democracy and integration with NATO and the EU which is our country's geo-strategic choice," Yakobashvili said.

The state minister said membership in the CIS does not meet priorities of the Georgian foreign policy.
