Azerbaijan’s ruling party assesses opposition’s chances in coming municipal elections

17 August 2009 [17:42] - TODAY.AZ
New Azerbaijan Party has began large-scale preparations for the coming municipal elections.
The NAP does not consider parties who intend to participate in municipal elections to be challenging rivals. The number of NAP members has almost reached half million. However, if you combine the number of members of all parties, they will not make any percentage of the total number of our supporters,” NAP senior official Ali Ahmadov said.

He said the ruling party has more chances to impact public processes.

Ahmadov said he hopes the election campaign will be competitive.

“If any party remains aside of the election, then it casts doubt on its existence. In addition, participation in elections is an important factor which shows to what degree political parties enjoy popular support,” Ahmadov said.

If a party does not participate in elections, it would mean that it lacks social support. I think self-respecting political party will make the right decision regarding participation in municipal elections,” Ahmadov said.
