Unstable situation in North Caucasus can have negative impact on Azerbaijan: expert

17 August 2009 [12:29] - TODAY.AZ
Unstable situation in the North Caucasus can have a negative impact on Azerbaijan and trade and economic ties with Russia, Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Musabayov said.
“What happens today in the North Caucasus is certainly a negative event for all of us,” Musabayov said commenting on worsened situation in the North Caucasus after the terrorist attack in Nazran on Monday morning.

“Azerbaijan’s communications lie through the North Caucasus and oil is exported via this route as well. Gas will be transported in future.”

“If the situation in the region will become uncontrollable, it will blow a deal to also our trade turnover with Russia which now exceeds $2 billion,” the expert said.

Musabayov said “republics in the Northern Caucasus and South Caucasus are like communicating vessels” and the current instability, besides the negative economic impact on the Azerbaijan-Russia relations, could lead to “export” of extremism, including the religious-based one to Azerbaijan from the North Caucasus.

“Therefore, in the case of strengthening of extremism and terrorism and lost of Russia’s control over this situation no one can guarantee that these negative trends will not reach us, as it happened in recent past when various extremist groups forces out from the North Caucasus tried to enter our territory,” the political expert said.
