Peacekeepers to be deployed to Karabakh must be from neutral states: expert

15 August 2009 [11:53] - TODAY.AZ
“I think it would be inappropriate to involve OSCE Minsk Group member states with peacekeeping contingent in Karabakh,” Azerbaijani political expert Fikrat Sadigov said while commenting on Baku’s stance which favors deployment of European and U.S. peacekeepers in Karabakh.
“I believe peacekeeping forces must be from neutral states. For example, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary and Romania. I think we have closer interests,  close contacts and partnerships with the countries of Eastern Europe,” he said.

“If the United States agrees to participate as a peacekeeping force in the territory of Karabakh, it would be very good. But I think that there will be conflict of interests between Russia and the United States. They will be unable to agree on the deployment of only U.S. military contingent. In the case of attempts to deploy U.S. troops, Russia will want to do the same,” he said.

“Of course, it would be suitable for us to see contingent of Turkey, which is a leading player in the region who recently attempted to play an active mediating role. But there will be objection by  Armenia. They will do everything to ensure that this did not happen,” Sadigov said.

“Unfortunately, practice shows that the troops of leading countries such as the United Kingdom, France and others participate in peacekeeping operations conducted by NATO. For example, as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo. But in the UN peacekeeping forces should include countries that I previously listed. This will be the best compromise solution to the question related to the deployment of peacekeeping troops in the liberated regions of Azerbaijan,” he said.
