Karabakh conflict settlement can do without peacekeepers: Azerbaijani MP

11 August 2009 [15:38] - TODAY.AZ
The issue of peacekeepers is the one of the issues that the sides have not coordinated yet,” Azerbaijani member of parliament and parliament’s security and defense committee deputy chairman Aydin Mirzazade said commenting on the statement by OSCE Minsk Group U.S. co-chair Mathew Bryza about deployment of peacekeeping forces in the zone of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“The issue of peacekeepers has been raised for a long time. Azerbaijan has proven that the status could be maintained and peace agreement can be reached without peacekeepers,” he said.

“Azerbaijan-Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the only conflict without peacekeepers where ceasefire is respected except for certain violations that occur from time to time on the part of Armenia,” Mirzazade said.

“I think that the issue of deployment of peacekeepers in the occupied Azerbaijani territories can be discussed only after the consent of both parties. It is difficult to say what their decision will be. Maybe there will be peacekeeping forces from Azerbaijani and Armenia or peacekeepers of certain countries agreed by both sides will be deployed. And perhaps, the parties will  agree not to deploy peacekeepers at all,” Mirzazade said.

“I do not think that there is an  urgent need for peacekeeping force as Azerbaijan and Armenia has long lived peacefully. I think they can do without peacekeepers. But if the issue of peacekeepers will be agreed upon in favor of their placement, then I do not think that they would remain in the territory for long. Azerbaijanis and Armenians sooner or later have to live in one area according to one law and in one state. I think that they will find a common language without intermediaries,” he said.
