"In Yerevan I did not say that return of 7 regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh will ensure Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,” OSCE Minsk Group U.S. co-chair Matthew Bryza said in an interview with ANS TV.
“First of all Azerbaijan’s five occupied regions will be returned and the remaining two will returned within 5 years. Return of these regions reflects principle of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,” he said.
“It is common knowledge that Nagorno-Karabakh is legally a territory of Azerbaijan. I did not say in Yerevan that return of 7 regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh will ensure Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity as Armenian media claims. I said that return of seven regions reflects principle of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,” Bryza said.
Bryza said the population will determine future status of Nagorno-Karabakh. “We do not yet know what the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will end with, but a referendum would be one of the main points.”
During a trip to the region, Bryza first visited Yerevan. Later he arrived in Tbilisi on August 9 and will arrive in Baku on August 13.
