Today’s Zaman: Opening borders between Armenia, Turkey will require intensified and delicate diplomacy with Azerbaijan

27 July 2009 [17:29] - TODAY.AZ
Vice President on international program and policy at the Hudson University Andrews Bimbash says opening Armenia-Turkey borders requires intensified and delicate diplomacy with Azerbaijan.
However, both Turkey and Azerbaijan will benefit if this happens at last, Today's Zaman reported.

The article said Russia which has dominated in the region since the collapse of the Soviet Union is trying to manipulate the regional countries through the long and protracted conflicts, such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia, including the Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Last summer, we witnessed how the two “frozen conflicts” were resolved in favor of Moscow. I doubt that Moscow will support any solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which could reduce its leverage towards Armenia and Azerbaijan,” article quoted Director of Russian and Eurasian Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies Andrew Kuchins as saying.

Nevertheless, the Armenia-Turkey relations can be regarded as an excellent opportunity for Armenia's way out of the Russian control and the withdrawal of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict of the impasse and, in fact, to ensure peace and stability in the region. Expert is skeptical about the fact that Moscow has really supports the normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations and opening of borders, since this would reduce the influence of Russia in Armenia.
