Whatever arbitration court decision is, neither Azerbaijan nor Turkmenistan will abide by it: expert

27 July 2009 [11:39] - TODAY.AZ
“Whatever the International Court of Arbitration decides, neither Azerbaijan nor Turkmenistan will abide by it,” Azerbaijani political expert Vafa Guluzade said while commenting on recent statement by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov to assert his country’s rights to disputable oil and gas fields on the Caspian Sea in arbitration court.
“This is not a new issue. It is known that the best way out this dispute is joint use of Kapaz (Serdar) field. The arbitration court will not solve anything,” he said.

“This dispute needs to be resolved amicably and quietly so that the decision will satisfy both Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan,” the expert said.

“I am afraid that there will be an intrigue instigated by third parties who have strong positions in Turkmenistan. I mean Russia. Two fraternal countries – Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan might aas well solve the dispute quietly in favor of their nations,” Guluzade said.
