Yemeni president hospitalized after injury

24 July 2009 [11:39] - TODAY.AZ
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been injured during routine physical exercise at the capital city of Sana'a, a Yemeni news agency reported.
Saleh, 68, was taken to a military hospital at a defense complex on Tuesday evening after he suffered bruises during regular exercise, the official Saba news agency reported.

It said the veteran leader, who has been at the helm since 1978, "continues to receive the treatment and he will, God willing, resume his daily activities as soon as he completes the treatment."

In July 1978, after the assassination of former president Ahmad al-Ghashmi, Saleh was first elected by the Constitutional Assembly (parliament) in north Yemen.

In May 1990 when north and south Yemen were unified, Saleh took over the presidency of the new state, Press TV reported.
