U.S. Vice President Biden's visit to Georgia and Ukraine aimed to some extent encourage ruling elites and authorities of these countries which feared that they can be left one on one with claims of Russia,” Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Musabayov said.

“Obviously, there is a link between Biden’s visit to Ukraine and Georgia and the preceding visit of Barack Obama to Moscow,” Musabayov said.
“Prior to this visit there were public calls in Russia that the condition for normalization of the U.S.-Russia relations and the willingness of Russia to meet the wishes of the United States which also applies to reduction of strategic forces and partly to the Iranian issue, should be U.S. recognition of Russia’s special rights in the post-Soviet space. It also stated that in general the United States will have to deal with these states through Russia. But this desire was publicly rejected in Russia,” he said.
“In Moscow Obama said that the sovereignty of Georgia is supported by the United States and the United States and civilized world will not recognize special rights over any state. I think that the purpose of Biden’s visit of to this country is to demonstrate this not only to Russian, but also other post-Soviet states, which are under pressure from Russia,” the political expert said.
“During Biden’s visit, the issue of contrasting democratic authorities of these countries with not very democratic authorities of other post-soviet countries was not specifically emphasized. The key idea that the U.S. supported and will support is the choice of these states to integrate to the West,” Musabayov said.
