Azerbaijan has well-defined defense, army building policy: member of parliament

14 July 2009 [11:21] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan has well-defined defense and army building policy, Azerbaijani member of parliament and deputy chairman of the Security and Defense Committee of the parliament Aydin Mirzazade said.
“Any state must always be ready to repel outside military threats. All military doctrines are usually defensive in nature. Azerbaijan is designing its military doctrine which will first of all involve  liberation of its occupied territories, but not an attack. It has been repeatedly stated that along with diplomatic means, there are other ways of liberation of these lands.”

“By designing its military doctrine, Azerbaijan also defines its priorities. These priorities should ensure military security, territorial integrity and also prove Azerbaijan  as a state strong enough to protect its interests,” he said.

“The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh is one of the key in this doctrine. Today it is the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, but tomorrow it may be another matter, and Azerbaijan has to be theoretically feasible and ready for this kind of threats,” he added.

“But, despite the fact that Azerbaijan does not have a military doctrine now, the country has well-defined defensive and army building policy. This is reflected in the Constitution of Azerbaijan, in the concept of national security and the policies pursued by country’s leadership today,” Mirzazade said.
